Cracked heels

PEDICARE SOLVES

What are cracked heels and why do they form?

Cracked heels, also called heel fissures, are not just a cosmetic problem. Incorrect or unprofessional care leads to more serious complications. The thick, hardened skin around a crack is very painful and limits how you move. What is more, a crack that is not treated professionally can even become infected, so it is essential to leave treatment to a specialist.

PEDICARE SOLVES

What can you do yourself, and how can we help?

Excess hardened skin needs to be removed and the skin nourished. Keep in mind that not every cream is suitable for feet: the skin here has a different structure and needs carefully chosen products. At Pedicare, we use only the best foot care products, among the world’s leading brands.

Footwear also plays an important role. Choose shoes that fit your feet well, as shoes that are too tight or too big are a common cause of problems and pain. The heel area should be nicely rounded and, especially in summer shoes, there should be no edges that you walk on, as they speed up the hardening of the skin.

At Pedicare, we offer professional treatment of cracked heels. We clean the cracks with surgically sterile instruments, remove the hard skin and dress the area so it can heal. Depending on how deep each crack is, the treatment may need to be repeated.

We also offer an innovative treatment with occlusive dressings, help you choose the right care product and advise you on home care.

Frequently Asked Questions

The skin on the feet is structured differently from the rest of the body. The soles have no sebaceous glands, so the skin surface lacks the oils it needs. If dry skin is not cared for properly, excess hardened skin builds up (hyperkeratosis). Because our feet carry more load than any other part of the body, this very dry, hardened skin starts to crack. Cracks can be fine and superficial, but they are often deep and reach the lower layers of the skin, where the blood vessels and nerves are. Such cracks are not only painful but also a risk to your health, as a crack is an ideal entry point for infection.
