Corns

PEDICARE SOLVES

What is a corn?

A corn, known medically as a clavus, is a cluster of excessively hardened skin cells concentrated in one spot. When cut through, a corn is usually cone-shaped. The skin there is usually yellowish and quite hard to the touch, and it can hurt under strong pressure.

Why does it hurt?

It is essentially a natural defence mechanism of the skin: where there is more friction or the most pressure, the skin produces more hardened cells. If a corn is not treated early and professionally, it becomes harder and harder and pushes into the deeper layers of the skin, where the nerves are. The corn then presses on the nerve endings, which causes pain and makes walking much harder.

Frequently Asked Questions

As explained above, a corn is a cluster of excessively hardened cells concentrated in one spot. The main cause is still unsuitable footwear, especially shoes that are too narrow or stiff, high heels and work shoes. Corns can also form in people who choose their shoes carefully but whose feet or toes are deformed for other reasons. People who are overweight and extreme athletes are also more at risk.

The most important thing is soft, comfortable footwear made of natural materials. Acid plasters, ointments and home remedies can make things worse, because they do not remove the corn completely, and they can also cause inflammation and infection that put your health at risk.

At Pedicare, we remove corns painlessly using surgically sterile instruments and advise you on how to relieve pressure on the overloaded area.
